Local Grown Tasty Lesvos Food

Lesvos has over 90,000 residents dispersed in small towns or as still called by many, villages. It is wise to drive around the island and taste various locally produced specialties. The olive oil is pure, the cheese full of flavours, the wine and ouzo are excellent, the meat is delicious and the fish is just as fresh as it can get.

There is no doubt: Greece is blessed with a fruitful land and a very rich sea.

Seasonal fruits and vegetables are often grown by locals and become easily accessible to the rest of us via grocery stores, mini markets and even some bigger super markets. A wide variety of imported goods is also available at all local markets.

A more traditional way of picking your vegetables and fruits is from the local farmer who strolls around with his donkey, carrying baskets filled with the goods of the day. It is quite a pleasant surprise, on a hot summer day, to come across the farmer and his donkey, offering you for a few Euros, fresh cherries and peaches. Walk in to any store and they will be happy to help you wash your fruits and enjoy a fresh healthy bite.

Everyday, a mix of colourful voices overtake the Lesvos villages. Travelers enthusiastically practice their broken Greek, locals speak loudly in a variety of dialects, and the distinct Greek accent fills the streets with life and energy.

Store owners casually chatting with passersby, cafes filled with people playing games of backgammon or having a Greek coffee, the farmer man with his donkey calling out his fresh veggies and when you thought this is as beautiful as as original as it gets, you hear new voices traveling over the village. Fishermen driving small pickup trucks, shout out (sometimes via speakers) your dinner options: fresh fish caught that same day or the night before. Approach the truck, mingle with the locals and pick your “catch of the day.”

It is a gift being in Lesvos and having a variety of locally produced goods to enjoy. During your holidays, welcome the experience of locals offering you a fruit from their garden, vegetables or if it is your lucky day, fresh eggs. Healthy food and kindness are abundant in Lesvos Island.
