Today Greek families continue to gather and enjoy their mealtimes together. If you are lucky and get invited for a Greek meal, gladly take up on this kind offer and add on to your experience as a local.
If you find yourself asking the question, “Do I get a plate?” stop yourself and look for the fork, because that is all you will need. If you have a fork (and preferably a glass of ouzo) that means you are welcome and have become a part of the parea (company of friends or family).
It is a well-known characteristic that traditionally Greeks share their food with their parea. The typical Greek food comes in smaller plates, is put in the middle of the table, everyone digs in with their forks and share the different flavourful cuisine. If you want a taste of this, try ordering mezedes at a Taverna or an Ouzeri. If you want a normal three course meal to yourself, you are better off at a restaurant where you will probably pay more and experience less. During your holidays we will be happy to share with you our personal favourite dishes and tavernas to enjoy them.
We suggest you always ask locals for tips on restaurants and tavernas. Always check out the local dish, order cheese from Madamados, pasto (marinated fish) and take in the house wine's aroma. Don’t forget at a taverna: you will be served bread at first, and fruit, Greek yogurt or sweets at the end of your meal.
Leave a tip when you feel the service was good, you might get a free round of beers or sfinakia (shots).
