Lesvos Petrified Forest

A unique experience that can take you back millions of years. Visitors have the chance to walk amongst geological monuments dating back 20 million years.

In Sigri, near the Holy Monastery of Hypsylou, you can take a long stroll (2.3 km) among the fossils of this natural monument.

The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest

Founded in 1994 and situated in the town of Sigri, The Natural History Museum has as main objectives to research, promote, preserve and protect the Petrified Forest of Lesvos.

The Museum hosts two permanent exhibitions that are worth the tour: the Petrified Forest Hall presents the development of plant life and the Petrified Forest; the Aegean Hall presents the geological evolution of the Aegean and much more. A European and Global Geopark

In 2004, the Petrified Forest of Lesvos, a founding member of the European Geoparks Network, became a member of the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) assisted by UNESCO

The European Geoparks Network is an organisation of 15 European countries, established in 2000, that "aims to protect geodiversity, to promote geological heritage to the general public, as well as to support sustainable economic development of geopark territories, primarily through the development of geological tourism."
